Shopify app costs can range from a few dollars a month to hundreds, depending on the apps you use and how those apps price their services. Some charge a flat monthly fee. Others scale based on orders, customers, subscription revenue, or usage. Add a few together, and the cost of your Shopify setup can look very different from the price of your Shopify plan alone.
That doesn't mean every merchant needs a large app stack. Shopify offers native functionality in some of these categories, while third-party apps often provide additional features, different workflows, or a different merchant and customer experience. But for growing brands that rely on several paid apps, those individual subscriptions can still add up quickly.
So what do Shopify apps actually cost? This post breaks down how app pricing works, what popular apps charge across common ecommerce categories, what a realistic app stack can add up to, and what the alternative looks like if you'd rather run your store without an app stack at all.
How Much Do Shopify Apps Cost?
There isn't one standard price for a Shopify app. Plenty are free. Others cost $10 or $20 a month. More specialized apps can run well into the hundreds, especially once pricing starts scaling with order volume, customers, subscriptions, or other usage.
We looked at 20 established Shopify apps across five categories growing ecommerce brands commonly use: product reviews, subscriptions, page building, loyalty, and B2B or wholesale.
- $26/month at the entry level
- $89/month at the growth level
- $193/month at the upper published tier
That doesn't mean the average Shopify merchant pays $200+ for apps, or even that every merchant needs paid apps in these categories. It just gives us a more useful baseline for what paid Shopify apps actually cost once you start comparing them across a real stack.
How Shopify App Pricing Works
Shopify apps tend to use a handful of pricing models.
Free apps. Some apps are completely free, including apps developed by Shopify itself.
Freemium apps. The free tier may work for a smaller store, while more advanced features are locked behind paid plans.
Flat monthly pricing. You pay a set amount every month for access to the app.
Tiered pricing. The monthly fee increases as you move into plans with more features or higher usage allowances.
Usage-based pricing. Your bill may change based on orders, contacts, support tickets, active subscriptions, pages, or another metric.
Transaction or revenue-based pricing. Some apps take a fee tied to the revenue or transactions they help process.
Shopify supports recurring, usage-based, and one-time app charges through its billing system. Some third-party services also bill outside your Shopify invoice. Shopify explains the different types of app charges here.
This is one reason app costs get harder to judge as a store grows. You aren't always adding more apps. Sometimes the apps you already use just get more expensive.
What Popular Shopify Apps Actually Cost
There are thousands of apps in the Shopify App Store, so there's no easy blanket answer.
To paint a picture of what Shopify apps can cost, we reviewed 20 popular apps across five categories that come up often for growing ecommerce businesses: product reviews, subscriptions, page building, loyalty, and B2B or wholesale.
For each app, we looked at publicly listed paid plans at three different levels: an entry plan, a plan that better reflects a growing business, and a higher published tier.
We excluded free plans when calculating the paid-plan medians. We also left transaction and usage fees out of the fixed monthly figures, since those depend on the individual store.
Pricing was reviewed in August 2026.
Product reviews
Reviews are one of the more common additions to an ecommerce storefront. The basic job is simple enough: let customers leave reviews and show them on product pages. Paid products start differentiating themselves through customization, syndication, integrations, automation, UGC collection, and analytics.
| App | Entry | Growth | Upper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Judge.me | $15/mo | $15/mo | $15/mo |
| Junip | $29/mo | $79/mo | $299/mo |
| Okendo | $19/mo | $119/mo | $299/mo |
| Ali Reviews | $14.95/mo | $24.95/mo | $49.95/mo |
Judge.me is the outlier here because its paid plan stays at $15. The other two get considerably more expensive as you move up.
Subscriptions
Subscription pricing is especially difficult to summarize because some providers charge a monthly subscription, some scale based on subscription revenue, and some combine the two.
| App | Entry | Growth | Upper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recharge | $99/mo* | $499/mo* | Custom |
| Appstle Subscriptions | $10/mo | $30/mo | $100/mo |
| Seal Subscriptions | $5.95/mo | $9.95/mo | $24.95/mo† |
| Subi Subscriptions | $29/mo* | $119/mo* | $479/mo* |
* Charges additional transaction fees on some plans.
† Seal offers additional plans beyond the standard tiers shown here.
The monthly subscription price may not tell you what the app will actually cost once you start processing orders. For instance, a store on Recharge's entry plan will pay 1.49% + $0.19 per transaction. That means at 500 subscription orders/month, they'll pay $99 + $7.45 + $95, or $201.45.
Page builders
Shopify themes already give merchants a way to build and customize storefront pages. Page builder apps are for businesses that want more control over landing pages, product layouts, campaign pages, testing, and other storefront experiences.
| App | Entry | Growth | Upper |
|---|---|---|---|
| PageFly | $24/mo | $99/mo | $299/mo |
| GemPages | $29/mo | $59/mo | $199/mo |
| Shogun | $39/mo | $199/mo | $499/mo |
| Pagetify | $9/mo | $19/mo | $59/mo |
Loyalty
Loyalty apps range from simple points programs to more involved VIP programs, referrals, rewards, and customer segmentation.
| App | Entry | Growth | Upper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smile | $15/mo | $79/mo | $199/mo* |
| Rivo | $15/mo | $49/mo* | $499/mo |
| Appstle Loyalty | $10/mo | $30/mo | $100/mo* |
| Bon | $15/mo | $29/mo | $129/mo |
* Some plans scale further based on order volume.
B2B and Wholesale
A store selling both direct to consumers and wholesale accounts may need customer-specific pricing, catalogs, quantity rules, payment terms, company accounts, or other B2B workflows.
| App | Entry | Growth | Upper |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSS B2B | $29/mo | $49/mo | $99/mo |
| Wholesale Pricing Discount B2B | $24.99/mo | $44.99/mo | $64.99/mo |
| Sparklayer | $49/mo | $149/mo | $299/mo |
| Wholesale Gorilla | $34.95/mo | $69.95/mo | $149.95/mo |
Shopify offers native B2B functionality, which we'll get to in a minute. The existence of B2B apps means some merchants choose a third-party product for the particular way they want to run it.
What the benchmark tells us
Across all 20 apps, the average paid plan in our sample was:
| Entry | Growth | Upper | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average monthly app price | $26/mo | $89/mo | $193/mo |
One $24 app probably isn't changing the economics of your business.
But most ecommerce businesses don't think about their software one app at a time. A reviews app here, a loyalty platform there, a page builder you installed two years ago and never removed. Eventually you have a stack.
The monthly expenses start to add up. But not only that…
Why Pay for an App if Shopify Already Has a Native Option?
Shopify has its own tools for some of these jobs.
Shopify Subscriptions is free. It supports common subscription frequencies, gives customers controls to pause or cancel subscriptions, and includes basic reporting.
Shopify also has Shopify Bundles, along with native B2B features on its current commerce plans.
So why would anyone pay for Recharge, a third-party bundle app, or another B2B tool?
Sometimes the native option does everything the merchant needs. Great. Take the win. Other times, the business needs something different.
Maybe it's more control over subscription workflows, better merchandising options, or more customization. App ratings provide a window into merchants' reasons for choosing one app over another.
As of our August 2026 research, Shopify Bundles had an average Shopify App Store rating of around 2.8 stars, while popular third-party bundle apps such as Bundler were around 4.9. Shopify Subscriptions was around 3.7, while third-party subscription tools including Subi were around 4.9.
Ratings aren't a perfect measure of quality. Apps serve different merchants, review counts vary, and ratings change over time.
But they can help explain why a free native option doesn't always eliminate demand for a paid third-party one.
For a growing merchant, the decision isn't necessarily if Shopify has x feature. It's whether that feature does what they need it to.
What Does a Realistic Shopify App Stack Cost?
While there isn't a single normal Shopify app stack, let's build a few examples from the pricing above.
A lighter paid stack: about $63/month
Take three categories:
- Product reviews: $19
- Page builder: $29
- Loyalty: $15
Using the median entry price in each category, that's $63 per month in apps.
For a growing business, that may be an easy trade. If those apps save time or generate enough additional revenue, $63 is not a particularly large bill.
A more developed stack: about $306/month
Now imagine the business has more requirements and is paying for growth-level plans across all five categories in our sample:
| Category | Median growth plan |
|---|---|
| Product reviews | $79/mo |
| Subscriptions | $30/mo |
| Page building | $99/mo |
| Loyalty | $49/mo |
| B2B / wholesale | $49/mo |
| Total | $306/mo |
That's $3,672 a year in fixed app subscriptions, based on a common merchant scenario.
A merchant using Shopify's native subscription or B2B tools could spend less. A merchant using more expensive providers, more categories, or usage-based products could spend considerably more.
Though not every Shopify store costs an extra $306 a month, the point still stands. The true cost of Shopify increasingly depends on the particular stack you've built around it.
And some of the costs won't necessarily show up as a neat line item. Apps like Recharge may add transaction fees or scale with order volume. Other ecommerce tools may price higher depending on contacts, tickets, emails, shipments, or customers.
There are other costs we haven't included here at all: email and SMS software, customer service platforms, shipping software, payment processing, and the Shopify plan itself.
Some of those costs would exist on almost any ecommerce platform, so it wouldn't be fair to call all of them Shopify app costs.
But they do matter when you're looking at your total software bill with an ecommerce platform.
An Alternative: Ecommerce Without Apps
Shopify's enormous app ecosystem is part of their appeal. You can choose among specialized tools for almost any problem, swap one provider for another, and build a stack that fits a complicated business surprisingly well.
The tradeoff is the time, effort, and investment that requires.
Each app is another product to choose, configure, pay for, and supervise to maintain harmony with everything else. Costs can scale independently and pricing models change. Something that seemed cheap when you installed it at $15 a month may look different a few years later.
Merchant Tech takes the opposite approach.
Instead of building a commerce platform around separately installed apps, the functionality is built into the platform.
Merchant Tech costs $79 a month. Website hosting, sales tax compliance, product subscriptions, wholesale and B2B workflows, product reviews, shipping discounts, order processing, inventory management, and support are all included.
If you depend on a specialized Shopify app or want access to an ecosystem with thousands of different extensions, Shopify's model may make perfect sense.
If most of your apps exist because you need your platform to handle ordinary parts of running and growing your business, a simpler setup may start to look a lot more attractive.
No app stack also means no app stack to audit, troubleshoot, or wonder why it suddenly costs $306 a month.
Shopify App Costs FAQs
How much do Shopify apps cost?
Shopify apps range from free to hundreds of dollars per month. In our review of 20 popular apps across five common ecommerce categories, entry-level paid plans ranged from $5.95 to $49 a month, while growth-level plans ranged from $9.95 to $499. Some apps also add usage, transaction, or revenue-based fees on top of the monthly price.
How much should I budget for apps in total?
It depends on how many paid apps you use and how specialized your setup is. A store using mostly Shopify's native features and one or two inexpensive apps may spend very little. A growing business using several paid apps can easily add a few hundred dollars a month. The best approach is to price the actual stack you expect to use rather than rely on an industry-wide average.
What kinds of pricing will I encounter?
Shopify apps use several pricing models. Some are completely free, while others offer a free tier with paid upgrades. Paid apps may charge a flat monthly fee, increase the price as you move into higher plans, or scale based on orders, customers, contacts, subscription revenue, or other usage. Some apps also charge transaction or revenue-based fees, so the listed monthly price may not be the full cost.
Which functions am I actually likely to pay extra for?
Growing stores often pay for more specialized tools around product reviews, subscriptions, page building, loyalty programs, B2B or wholesale, email and SMS, shipping, and analytics. Shopify has native functionality in some of these areas, so a third-party app isn't always necessary. Merchants generally pay extra when they want more features, different workflows, stronger customization, specific integrations, or a product they simply prefer using.
Why is my app bill so high, and how can I reduce it?
App bills tend to climb for two reasons: stores add more software over time, and the apps they already use get more expensive as the business grows. Start by looking for apps you no longer use, overlapping tools that solve the same problem, and plans that are too large for your current needs. Pay particular attention to usage-based charges, since those can increase even if you haven't installed anything new.
How does app spend affect Shopify's true total cost?
Your Shopify plan is only part of the cost of running the platform. Paid apps and usage fees should be included when comparing total platform costs, along with any staff or developer time needed to make your store work and perform its best.
Is there a Shopify alternative that includes these features natively?
Merchant Tech includes product subscriptions, B2B and wholesale tools, website hosting, and order processing at a flat $79/month. No additional apps required for those capabilities. Credit card processing starts at 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Learn more here.
When does the Shopify app stack make sense to keep?
When your operations require specific integrations that only exist in Shopify's ecosystem, or when you've built a mature, functional stack that works well for your operation and the switching cost outweighs the savings. Shopify's app marketplace is one of the broadest in ecommerce. If you're using it intentionally, it can be worth the cost.
